YOU WON’T WALK A MILE

You can’t understand why
his favorite word for you is vile.
On the road to self-confidence,
you won’t walk a mile.

You can’t understand why
he would love that man over there,
when he was made for a woman.
You’re more woman than most.

Your jealousy would like to nail him to the post.
Your dreams would make him sheepish and servile.
You should be put on trial.
On the road to acceptance,
you won’t walk a mile.

Love yourself, love him too,
no matter whom he may choose.
Walk with him, the one that you loved.
Walk with him down many a mile.

But you won’t walk a mile.
No, not until you assume the shape
of an envied, burlesque dancer–
the kind that entertains him and his kind.
So you walk and you stalk up that same, repetitive block,
over and over, like some lunatic hamster.
Until you can yield to the mirror
and give yourself an appreciative smile,
you won’t walk a mile.
